Do men with rosacea sub type 2 often have bad acne when teenagers

Do men with rosacea sub type 2 often have had bad acne when they were teenagers?

and why understanding your male teenage acne can help you understand your adult male rosacea.

Rosacea and acne are both relatively common skin conditions that primarily affect the face with spots, bumps or pimples. If you have suffered with either of these, it’s likely that it affects your confidence of self esteem to some extent.

But if you are a man who had fairly serious acne as a teenager are you more likely to have rosacea type 2 in later life ? That was the question I asked an Irish dermatologist recently, And the answer is yes. In her many years of experience in dermatology, she has found that men with fairly troubling teenage acne can regularly develop rosacea in adult life.

The good news is that you can do something about it

What is rosacea?

Let’s start with the basics. You might already know what rosacea is but we’ll give a quick refresher. Rosacea is a common condition that affects the skin by causing redness, visible blood vessels, and/or small acne-like bumps. It affects mainly the face, in particular the cheeks and nose. A study done in 2018 found that rosacea affects around 415 million people worldwide or one in ten people in the US.

Rosacea is a long-term condition that can affect anyone. It’s more prevalent in women but tends to be more severe in men. Fair-skinned people are more prone to rosacea and it’s more common in those over 30. Genetics can have a part to play in whether or not you will develop rosacea at some point and it mostly affects people of northern or eastern European descent. This is why it became known as the curse of the celts.

Rosacea subtype 2

Rosacea type 2 is an oily skin condition. Teenage acne is also an oily skin condition. That is the big link between the two conditions.

While men do not like teenage acne or adult rosacea we can do something about both, by concentrating on the oil production in the skin. Lets look at it deeper.

Men in particular are predisposed to oily skin in teenage years when acne can be a problem. Severe teenage acne in men is linked to an overabundance of sebum in the skin.  Adult acne or Rosacea sub type 2 as its better known, is believed to be linked in part to demodex mites.  Demodex mites live naturally in the skin of all mammals including humans. They come out at night to feed on the skin oil/sebum and also to mate.

Demodex mites love oily skin, which means that excess sebum (oil) on the skin can create the conditions they love and can mean overgrowth of mites on the skin.  So the very reason you have teenage acne is because of excess oil and now in adult life that same oily skin is creating an ideal breeding ground for demodex mites.

Excess demodex mites can trigger inflammation, which may worsen skin conditions like acne or rosacea

Controlling sebum production through proper skincare and treatments can help reduce the mite population and improve overall skin health. And that’s where finca skin organics calming serum 2 comes in. It is formulated especially for this type of skin and has all of the right ingredients to help control the demodex mite population by controlling their food supply – sebum and hence reduce the physical signs of rosacea type 2..

Correct skincare is crucial to controlling rosacea subtype 2. Finca skin organics Calming serum 2 has tea tree oil to control the demodex mite population and also zinc oxide to dry up some of the sebum that the mites feed on.

Signs that demodex mites are dying off

Less Itching : this could indicate that the mites are less active.

Reduced Redness: Skin may start to look calmer and less irritated.

Improved Skin Texture: Smoother skin with less bumps or rough patches suggests that the mites are dying off.

Less Oily skin: reduction in oiliness means less food for the mites and would be a sign that they are declining in numbers.

Healing of Existing Lesions: Any previous lesions or sores may begin to heal more quickly.

Remember at the beginning of using any treatment that is working for rosacea sub type 2, you may find that at first the skin seems worse than before. This could indicate the mites are dying off and is fairly common. (But always patch test any new skincare product before use so you know you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients.)
